Throughout my many years of practicing art, I have come to think of art as a type of language—as a type of exercise—a kind of practice and balance, like Chinese Zen.

I do not believe the main purpose of creating art is to sell it or to gain celebrity in society; rather it is to develop a healthy and self-improving system.

The work of art is to research, study, and create. Maybe that's why arts institutions exist today—before we throw something away, we need to take a closer look to see if there is a treasure there. In my home country of China, for example, an uneducated population once burned and destroyed all traditional art with revolutionary passion. This happened because people had no knowledge, respect, or appreciation for traditional culture or art.

My working process is a modest, courteous, natural learning process; in its ideal form it allows me to grow organically like a tree:

To be a root to respect the art traditions and diverse art forms and techniques;

To be a trunk to grow different branches and explore artistic styles in an adventurous journey;

To be a leaf to absorb sunlight as well as influences from the contemporary art world and its critical and theoretical issues.

Overall, only my artwork can be my exact statement.
